Compound class:
Synthetic organic
Comment: Maresins are anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators that are biosynthesised from docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; an omega-3 fatty acid) by macrophages. Maresin 1 was the first family member to be identified [5-6].

Immunopharmacology Comments |
Maresin 1, is one member of a family of DHA-derived omega-3 fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving actions in human disease [4]. Bioactive lipid mediators that include the resolvins, lipoxins and maresins can be known collectively as 'specialised pro-resolving mediators' (or SPMs). Subnormal levels of SPMs has been correlated with severity of symptoms in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment with maresin 1 produces a potent and persisting analgesic/anti-inflammatory effect in relevant rodent models [1,3]. |
