GtoPdb Ligand ID: 4974

Synonyms: catabolin | interleukin-1 beta
Immunopharmacology Ligand
Comment: IL-1β is an IL-1 family cytokine produced from the IL1B gene. It is produced by activated macrophages as a proprotein which is cleaved by cytosolic caspase 1 to the mature, active molecule.
Species: Human
Immunopharmacology Comments
IL-1β is a very important mediator of the inflammatory response [5]. Increased production of IL-1β underlies the pathology of a number of different autoinflammatory syndromes [8] and inflammatory mechanisms that drive atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease [9], so it is the target of drug development efforts. Anti-IL-1β drugs already approved include rilonacept and canakinumab.
