Compound class:
Synthetic organic
Comment: Modafinil is a eugeroic (wakefulness-promoting) drug with a multi-faceted mechanism of action. In some jurisdictions this drug is classified as a controlled substance due to its possible addiction potential. It has been termed a 'smart' drug, a group of prescription medications, purchased illegally or used off-label, with alleged cognition-enhancing properties [1,4].
![]() Ligand Activity Visualisation ChartsThese are box plot that provide a unique visualisation, summarising all the activity data for a ligand taken from ChEMBL and GtoPdb across multiple targets and species. Click on a plot to see the median, interquartile range, low and high data points. A value of zero indicates that no data are available. A separate chart is created for each target, and where possible the algorithm tries to merge ChEMBL and GtoPdb targets by matching them on name and UniProt accession, for each available species. However, please note that inconsistency in naming of targets may lead to data for the same target being reported across multiple charts. ✖ |

Summary of Clinical Use ![]() |
May be used to treat excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder [2]. |
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects ![]() |
One of the mechanisms by which modafinil is proposed to operate, is as an atypical dopamine reuptake inhibitor [7]. This action would increase dopamine levels in the brain and thereby promote wakefulness. The involvement of other mechanisms is reviewed in these two articles: [3] and [5]. |
