Summary of Clinical Use
Used as an antiarthritic and to treat inflammations of the eye. Marketing authorisation has been discontinued in the US, but other national approval agencies may continue to grant marketing authorisation.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
As with other NSAIDs, this drug reduces prostaglandin synthesis by reducing cyclooxegenase (COX) activity. Trauma to the eye may increase release of endogenous prostaglandin and this leads to constriction of the iris sphincter. Suprofen is used to prevent this occurring during eye surgery where the surgeon requires the pupil to be open.
