Used to treat moderate-to-severe insomnia. This drug is not approved by the US FDA or the EMA. Individual national approval agencies may have granted marketing authorisation. The UK first approved use of this drug in 2009.

Lormetazepam is a non-selective positive allosteric modulator of GABAA channels, which binds to the benzodiazepine allosteric site. The drug enhances the inhibitory effects of GABA, which results in anxiolytic, muscle relaxant; anticonvulsant and sleep-promoting effects.
