Pannexin 1 channels have been associated with noradrenergic activity and neuronal hyperexcitability in the locus coeruleus during opioid withdrawal. Blocking channel activity is proposed as a pharamcological mechanism to counteract the physical and aversive symptoms of opioid withdrawal syndrome.
