Comment: Pivampicillin is a pivaloyloxymethyl ester and prodrug of the β-lactam antibacterial compound ampicillin [1]. It has improved oral bioavailability compared to ampicillin and is rapidly hydrolysed to the active form following absorption from the gastrointestinal tract [3].

Summary of Clinical Use ![]() |

| Pivampicillin was widely marketed in a number of European countries but is currently only approved for use in Denmark. It is used in the treatment of infections caused by ampicillin-sensitive bacteria, including upper and lower respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections and uncomplicated gonorrhea, caused by penicillin-sensitive strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Pivampicillin can cause a decrease in serum carnitine [2]. |
