Phosphatases

Protein phosphatases act as functional antagonists of kinases to regulate reversible protein phosphorylation, which is the dominant post-translational modification for modulating cellular signalling. Balance between kinase and phosphatase activities is crucial for regulating diverse cellular functions (including proliferation, differentiation, and stress responses) and physiological processes, whilst mutation, overexpression, or deletion of genes for the proteins on either side of this balance results in abnormal cellular responses, with often pathological effects.
