Introduction

This help documentation describes the specific pages and content developed for the Guide to MALARIA PHARMACOLOGY (abbreviated as GtoMPdb), how they are structured, and how users can access them and find GtoMPdb data. For more detailed information about the Guide to MALARIA PHARMACOLOGY please visit the About page.

The Guide to PHARMACOLOGY (GtoPdb) Help Page provides more extensive help on using the website and understanding its contents. Please refer to this for information beyond the scope of specific GtoMPdb features and data. Please note this will take you away from the GtoMPdb focussed pages.

The Data in the Guide to MALARIA PHARMACOLOGY

The data are primarily summarised from selected primary literature articles, which are linked to PubMed. Where possible the data are linked to other relevant databases for further information. A GtoMPdb specific tag has been introduced to identify relevant data.

Entry points to the data are either via the database search tools (quick search at the top of every page or 'Advanced Search' tools linked from the menu) or through browsing the target and ligand lists. The GtoMPdb portal provides the additional function to browse by Parasite Lifecycle Stage or by Target Species.

Whole Cell Assay Data

A new whole organism assay type has been introduced to capture data from the whole cell assays used routinely in antimalarial drug discovery. This information is contained in the interactions table available on both the Detailed Target Page and Ligand Summary Page.

Parasite Lifecycle Stage Data

Information about the parasitic lifecycle activity of an antimalarial ligand is now available. GtoMPdb uses a set of top-level Plasmodium lifecycle stages (collective categories for one or more developmental forms of the parasite) against which interactions in the database can be annotated and which form the basis of organising, navigating and searching for parasitic lifecycle activity.

Target Species

Further details about the Plasmodium species/strain used in an assay can be stored in the database and displayed using a pop-up window that has been added to the interactions table.

Searching the Guide to MALARIA PHARMACOLOGY

A quick search box is available at the top of all pages, which can be used to search across the whole of the Guide to PHARMACOLOGY database. When run from GtoMPdb, results of higher relevance to malarial pharmacology will be up-weighted.

The target advanced search can be accessed from the Target panel on the GtoMPdb home page. The ligand advanced search is accessed from the Ligand main menu and via the ligand panel on the GtoMPdb home page.

Full details on using the main site advanced search can be found on the main GtoPdb help page.

Detailed Target Pages

Details of the information provided on Detailed Target Pages can be found on the main GtoPdb help page. In addition, the following information is displayed on Detailed Target pages for Plasmodium molecular targets:

Whole Organism Assay Data Linked to this Target - Provides ligand interaction data for the target. Further details of the assay used and the parasite lifecycle activity evaluated can be viewed by clicking the arrowheads in the right-hand column of the table.

Malaria Pharmacology Comments - General malaria related comments about the target's inclusion in the GtoMPdb.

Ligand Pages

Details of the information provided on Ligand Summary Pages can be found on the main GtoPdb help page. In addition, the following information is displayed on Ligand Summary pages for Plasmodium molecular targets:

Whole organism assay data (under Biological activity Tab) - Provides interaction data from the cellular screens used routinely in antimalarial drug discovery. Further details of the assay used and the parasite lifecycle activity evaluated can be viewed by clicking the arrowheads in the right-hand column of the table.

Guide to Malaria Pharmacology Comments (under Malaria Tab) - General malaria related comments about the ligand's inclusion in the GtoMPdb.

Ligand List

The Guide to MALARIA PHARMACOLOGY ligand list provides a directory of ligands described in the database that are defined as antimalarials. At present, two lists are provided, one showing all antimalarials and a second showing just those that are approved drugs. Ligands are sorted alphabetically as far as possible.

The 'AntiMal' tab provides a distinct list of all ligands that have been tagged as antimalarials. These ligands are also highlighted in all other lists by the appearance of the 'Antimalarial ligand' icon next to the ligand name.

Icon/Table heading Definition
Antimalarial ligand Indicates that the ligand has been tagged in the database as being relevant to GtoMPdb
