Immunopharmacology Comments
A type III membrane bound receptor for B-cell activating factor (BAFF). BAFF enhances B-cell survival and hence regulates the peripheral B-cell population. It is suggested that overproduction of BAFF may enhance the survival of autoreactive B cells, an effect which may contribute in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. An anti-BAFF receptor monoclonal antibody called VAY736 (Novartis) is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials for primary Sjögren's syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, autoimmune hepatitis, and pemphigus vulgaris (April 2018).
