As part of the innate inflammatory response to invading mobile bacteria, NLRC4 (Ipaf) in macrophages induces a pro-inflammatory response upon detection of cytosolic bacterial flagellin. In contrast, extracellular bacterial flagellin is detected by TLR5 [1].
