Deserpidine may be used to treat high blood pressure and alleviate psychotic behaviour. There is no information regarding approval for clinical use of this drug on the US FDA website. Other national approval agencies may have granted marketing authorisation.

Deserpidine inhibits the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (SLC18A2). This decreases the amount of the monoamine neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine stored in presynaptic vesicles, and results in increased metabolism of the extra-vesicular neurotransmitters by monoamine oxidase. This leads to an net reduction in catecholamine-driven neuro-activity.
