Used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, goiter, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, myxedema coma and stupor either alone or in combination with antithyroid agents.

Converted to the active metabolite triiodothyronine (T3) in the liver, which then binds to thyroid hormone binding proteins before binding to thyroid hormone receptors in the cytoplasm and nucleus.
