Ergotamine shares structural similarity with neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine and is therefore an agonist of several receptors. Ergotamine causes vasoconstriction and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides which correlate with relief of migraine symptoms.
